Have you ever experienced a dream about someone dying?
Were you left contemplating the meaning behind it?
These types of dreams can be tough on your soul. But the meaning behind death dreams is not as bad as you may think.
A few weeks ago, I experienced my first dream involving death. Well, the only death dream I remember ever having. My husband and I were driving down a busy road. He turns to me and casually says to me that the oncoming traffic is hugging the middle line quite a bit. I remember thinking that this is an uncommon thing for my husband to say. He is the more confident driver between us. So, I took notice of his comment.
A semi-truck turned left in front of us. My husband slammed on the brakes and turned the car so his side would take the most impact. A bright white light engulfed me. And what I can only explain as a “wave of calm” overwhelmed my body. I was in an entirely peaceful state.
Then, someone asked if I wanted to die or go back. I couldn’t see anyone but could feel their presence. They said if I choose to go back that I would and be in physical pain. It was like they were asking me this in my mind. I replied by saying that I wanted to go back to my kids. And within moments I was suddenly awake. I remember knowing that my husband never got asked the question. He was just gone.
The dream was so vivid and felt so real. I was left wondering if it was a dream or a premonition. And I knew I had to find out the meaning behind dreaming of someone dying?
I bet this is why you are reading this blog post too.
So I will do my best to share with you what I found out below.
What does dreaming about death mean?
Why am I dreaming about someone dying?
More often than not, the meaning behind a death dream comes from the relationship you have with the person who died in the dream. This could be a positive or negative relationship. Death dreams don’t mean that you want the person to die. It could simply mean that you’re experiencing feelings around the current relationship you have with that person. Whether it be a parent, relative or friend.
Some common dream death dream experiences are as follows:
- The death of a parent
- The death of a random individual
- The death of one of your friends
- The death of your spouse
- The death of someone you used to know or associate with.
But the meaning can have nothing to do with the person and is simply from changes in your life
Death dreams can be derived from experiences in your life such as,
- Change in career or relationships
- Feelings of guilt about your own actions
- The fear of losing a loved one
- The feeling you get when you’re betrayed by someone close to you
Dreams about the death of a parent
This dream is likely one of the more common dreams about death. This is also a dream that tends to occur as you grow older. The meaning of this dream is simple to understand because it actually plays off of your fear of them dying.
Losing parents can be scary for some, and this type of dream is the embodiment of that fear.
For example, if you dream about your mom dying, you could be experiencing fear of her dying in real life. This dream becomes more common as we grow older because our parents are growing older as well.
If your parents are older or are battling an illness like cancer, the chances of having this dream more likely.

A dream about a friend dying can be a bit harder to pick apart. Because there can actually be various meanings associated with this dream.
Generally, the meaning of a friend dying in your dream has to do with the relationship you have with them.
Ask yourself if there has been a significant change in your friendship? Or has your has betrayed you?
You should also be aware that guilt can play a huge role here. So if you feel guilty about something you’ve done to that friend, this dream can be the embodiment of that guilt.
Death dreams with friends can be tricky. Sometimes the meaning of the dreams has nothing with your relationship. But with your external environment. If this happens to be the case, try looking at other areas of your life where changes might be happening.
Dreaming about the death of your spouse
This is one of those dreams that can leave you scared when you wake up. Imagine seeing the one you love die before your eyes, and you’ll understand why this dream can be so impactful. Luckily, most of the time, you’ll be reassured when you wake up next to them sleeping soundly. You might even give them a little extra love that day.

This is definitely one of those dreams that hits close to home, but it can definitely be explained. Most of the time, this dream will occur when changes in your relationship happen. Or if you become worried, you might lose that person.
When your loved one passes away in a dream, ask yourself questions about the state of your relationship. Has something changed?
If something has changed in your relationship, or if your partner seems distant, your brain may end up playing this cruel trick on you. That fear of losing them will be woken up in your dreams.
The death of your spouse does not always have to come from a lousy meaning. I know this sounds kind of odd, but often, it is true. In life, there are plenty of good changes. If you’re pregnant, or your spouse is pregnant, this is definitely a great example of Change.
